JATIMTIMES - Dunia bulu tangkis internasional kehilangan salah satu ikon terbesarnya. Pebulu tangkis tunggal putra Denmark, Viktor Axelsen, resmi mengumumkan pensiun dari dunia profesional pada Rabu (15/4/2026).
Keputusan itu disampaikan langsung melalui akun media sosial pribadinya. Cedera punggung yang tak kunjung pulih menjadi alasan utama peraih dua medali emas Olimpiade tersebut memilih gantung raket di usia 32 tahun.

“Hari ini adalah hari yang tidak mudah untuk saya. Karena masalah punggung, saya tidak bisa lagi bersaing dan berlatih di tingkat teratas,” tulis Viktor Axelsen dalam akun Instagramnya, Rabu (15/4/2026).

Axelsen mengaku telah menjalani berbagai upaya pemulihan, mulai dari operasi, perubahan metode latihan, hingga perawatan intensif untuk mengurangi rasa sakit pada area punggung bawahnya. Namun, seluruh usaha tersebut belum mampu mengembalikan kondisinya ke level kompetitif.
“Menerima situasi saat ini sangatlah sulit. Tapi saya telah mendapatkan kesimpulan bahwa tubuh saya sudah tidak bisa melanjutkan,” tulis Axelsen.
Profil Lahir di Odense, Denmark, pada 4 Januari 1994, Axelsen mulai dikenal sejak usia muda ketika menjuarai World Junior Championships 2010. Sejak saat itu, kariernya melesat cepat hingga menjadi pemain nomor satu dunia BWF.
Namanya makin besar setelah merebut gelar juara dunia pertama pada 2017 di Glasgow. Lima tahun berselang, ia kembali menorehkan prestasi dengan merebut gelar juara dunia 2022 di Tokyo.
Puncak kariernya terjadi di panggung Olimpiade. Axelsen sukses meraih emas tunggal putra di Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics setelah mengalahkan Chen Long.
Ia kemudian mengulang prestasi yang sama di Paris 2024 Summer Olympics dengan mempertahankan medali emas. Hal ini menjadikan Axelsen sebagai salah satu sedikit pemain yang mampu back-to-back juara Olimpiade di nomor tunggal putra.
Selain itu, Axelsen juga pernah merebut medali perunggu di Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Sepanjang kariernya, ia dikenal sebagai pemain dengan postur tinggi, pukulan smash keras, dan kontrol rally yang dominan.

Pengumuman pensiun Axelsen langsung menuai reaksi dari para pemain dunia, termasuk atlet Indonesia. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting pun menyampaikan ucapan perpisahan.
“Selamat menikmati masa pensiun, sobat! Selamat atas karier yang luar biasa! Semoga yang terbaik menanti di babak baru hidupmu,” tulis Ginting.
Ucapan serupa datang dari Jonatan Christie. “Selamat menikmati masa pensiun, Champ. Merupakan suatu kehormatan bisa bermain bersama Anda di lapangan. Sampai bertemu dan semoga beruntung di bab selanjutnya,” tulis Jonatan.
Pebulu tangkis muda Alwi Farhan juga ikut memberikan pesan. “Selamat menikmati masa pensiun papa Viggo. Kamu benar-benar juara dan legenda. Saya mengingat nasihatmu sampai sekarang. Itu sangat berarti bagi saya, berharap hal terbaik untukmu,” katanya.
Dari sektor ganda, Fajar Alfian, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, hingga Mohammad Ahsan turut menyampaikan salam perpisahan.
Hingga Rabu sore, nama Viktor Axelsen masuk daftar pencarian teratas Google. Banyak yang mencaritahu kabar Axelsen yang memutuskan untuk gantung raket ini.
