JATIMTIMES - Sebanyak 801 pelajar SMP dan MTs dari berbagai daerah di Jawa Timur beradu kemampuan dalam ajang BIG SMK Jatim Cup-Junior Level (BSJC-JL) 2026. Kompetisi pertama kalinya digelar khusus bagi jenjang SMP/MTs ini menjadi panggung bagi para siswa menunjukkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris, kreativitas, hingga kepercayaan diri di tengah perkembangan teknologi kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence/AI).
Ratusan pelajar itu telah melalui tahapan penyisihan. Totalnya ada sebanyak 201 peserta terbaik berhasil melaju ke babak grand final yang digelar di Aula AVA Gedung D14 Lantai 2 Fakultas Sastra Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Selasa (2/6/2026).

Pada BSJC-JL 2026, peserta bersaing dalam lima cabang lomba, yakni Story Telling, News Anchor, English Speech, English Olympiad, dan Solo Singing. Ragam kategori tersebut dirancang untuk mengakomodasi kemampuan akademik, public speaking, hingga seni pertunjukan berbahasa Inggris.
Ketua MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Provinsi Jawa Timur, Andik Tohari, mengatakan perluasan kompetisi ke tingkat SMP dan MTs dilakukan untuk menjawab kebutuhan akan wadah pengembangan talenta bagi pelajar usia dini yang memiliki minat dan kemampuan di bidang bahasa Inggris.
Melihat selama ini antusiasme pelajar terhadap kompetisi bahasa Inggris cukup tinggi. Namun, kesempatan bagi siswa SMP dan MTs untuk mengembangkan potensi tersebut secara berkelanjutan masih terbatas.
“BSJC-JL hadir sebagai sarana pengembangan kompetensi sekaligus ajang aktualisasi diri bagi siswa SMP dan MTs se-Jawa Timur. Kami ingin memberikan pengalaman kompetitif yang tidak hanya menguji kemampuan akademik, tetapi juga membangun kepercayaan diri, karakter, kreativitas, dan keterampilan komunikasi yang sangat dibutuhkan pada era global dan era kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence),” kata Andik Tohari.
Penguasaan bahasa Inggris saat ini, lanjut Andik memiliki keterkaitan erat dengan perkembangan teknologi digital dan AI. Kemampuan tersebut menjadi bekal penting bagi generasi muda untuk memanfaatkan teknologi secara produktif sekaligus meningkatkan daya saing di masa depan.
Tak hanya menjadi ajang berburu prestasi, kompetisi yang diinisiasi MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Jawa Timur ini juga telah melahirkan banyak alumni berprestasi. Andik menambahkan sejumlah peserta BSJC tingkat SMK pada tahun-tahun sebelumnya berhasil diterima melalui jalur Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Prestasi (SNBP) di berbagai perguruan tinggi negeri unggulan.
“Prestasi bukan hanya tentang trofi. Kompetisi seperti BSJC memberikan nilai tambah yang nyata dalam perjalanan akademik siswa. Banyak alumni kami yang berhasil melanjutkan pendidikan ke perguruan tinggi negeri favorit berkat rekam jejak prestasi yang mereka bangun sejak sekolah,” imbuh Andik.
Sejumlah perguruan tinggi yang menjadi tujuan para alumni tersebut di antaranya Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), Politeknik Negeri Malang (Polinema), hingga Universitas Trunojoyo Madura (UTM).
Penyelenggaraan grand final BSJC-JL 2026 juga mendapat apresiasi dari Fakultas Sastra Universitas Negeri Malang yang menjadi tuan rumah pelaksanaan kegiatan.

Ketua Departemen Sastra Inggris Fakultas Sastra UM, Suharyadi, mengaku terkesan dengan skala kompetisi yang diikuti ratusan peserta dari berbagai wilayah di Jawa Timur. Menurutnya, kolaborasi antara komunitas guru dan perguruan tinggi mampu menghadirkan program yang memberikan dampak nyata bagi pengembangan generasi muda.
“Kami sangat menghargai kerja luar biasa MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Jawa Timur. Kegiatan seperti ini menunjukkan bahwa kolaborasi antara sekolah dan perguruan tinggi dapat menghasilkan program yang berdampak nyata bagi pengembangan generasi muda,” ucap Suharyadi.
Dukungan terhadap ajang tersebut juga disampaikan Wakil Dekan III Fakultas Sastra UM, Edi Hidayat. Ia menilai kompetisi tidak sekadar menjadi arena perlombaan, melainkan sarana membentuk karakter, memperluas jejaring akademik, dan menyiapkan siswa menghadapi tantangan global.
Keberhasilan penyelenggaraan perdana BSJC-JL dengan melibatkan lebih dari 800 peserta menunjukkan besarnya minat pelajar terhadap kompetisi bahasa Inggris. Sinergi antara MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Jawa Timur dan Universitas Negeri Malang pun dinilai bisa menjadi model kolaborasi pendidikan yang mendorong lahirnya generasi muda berprestasi dan siap menghadapi era kecerdasan buatan.
