Akhir-akhir ini, di Kota Marmer Tulungagung sering terdengar kata garangan bagi pria hidung belang dan garanganwati bagi wanita pelakor. Sebenarnya apa sih garangan itu?

Mengutip dari Wikipedia, garangan Jawa (Herpestes Javanicus) adalah sejenis karnivora kecil anggota suku Herpestidae. Menyebar luas di Asia Tenggara dan Asia Selatan, hewan ini dalam bahasa Inggris dikenal sebagai Javan Mongoose, Small Indian Mongoose, atau Small Asian Mongoose.

Hewan pemangsa ini umumnya hidup di semak-semak dan padang rumput daripada di hutan yang rapat. Aktif di atas tanah (terestrial) dan jarang memanjat pohon, garangan tidur dalam lubang-lubang di tanah, lubang pohon, dan tempat yang serupa.

Garangan Jawa aktif berburu mangsa di siang maupun malam hari. Ia sering terlihat menyeberangi jalan di siang hari, dengan badan rendah di atas tanah dan ekor lurus di belakangnya. 

Mangsa utamanya adalah tikus. Tetapi garangan tidak keberatan memangsa apa pun hewan kecil yang ditemuinya seperti burung, kodok, reptil, yuyu, serangga, dan kalajengking.

 Dilaporkan bahwa garangan acap menjilati dan mengisap-isap darah mangsanya yang keluar dari luka. Karena itu, hewan ini dapat membunuh banyak ayam bila sempat masuk ke kandang.

Garangan atau cerpelai dikenal sebagai musuh atau pemangsa ular. Perkelahian garangan dengan ular sendok (kobra) sangat populer meskipun agaknya ular hanyalah bagian kecil dari porsi mangsa garangan. 

Garangan Jawa tidak memiliki musim kawin yang khusus. Hewan betina melahirkan 2–4 anak setelah mengandung selama sekitar 6 minggu.

Kenapa di Tulungagung, pria play boy dan wanita pelakor disamakan dengan garangan? Dari berbagai postingan di media sosial, ada kesamaan sifat manusia dan hewan yang diberi istilah garangan. 

"Karena sama-sama suka memangsa dan selalu menjilati luka kecil.byapi untuk manusia biasanya di daerah sensitif termasuk leher," kata seorang netizen yang enggan disebutkan namanya.

Istilah garangan sendiri kini menjadi populer untuk sebutan pria dan wanita yang melampaui batas dalam menjalin hubungan.
